| Thessaloniki Cultural Capital of Europe
“embraces” the art of photography by establishing and activating a Museum
of Photography based in Thessaloniki. The Museum has already been operating
since spring 1995 when its activity was institutionalised by a decision
made by the administrative committee of Thessaloniki Cultural Capital of
Europe ‘97.
The consultative committee of Photography Museum consists of established photographers of Thessaloniki who have marked with their work the history of photography both in Thessaloniki and in rest of Greece. The activities of the Photography Museum of Thessaloniki include almost all of photography exhibitions of the cultural programme of the Organisation of Thessaloniki Cultural Capital of Europe ‘97. There are also educational exchange programmes like the one between Thessaloniki & Stockholm. The Photography Museum contributes to exhibitions made by other institutions such as the Photography Center of Thessaloniki and “Creation Gallery”. Two important meetings constituted turning points in the operation of the Museum. The first one took place in June 1995, which which was when the philosophy of the Museum was developed. The second one, which concerned the Greek Fotoreportage, took place in May 1997 and for the first time in Greece it managed to gather rich and interesting material from this particularly active field of photography. The Photography Museum of Thessaloniki already has in its possesion, thanks to donations the Nelly’s photographic archive as well as other important archives of modern greek photographers. More photographic archives are planned to be purchased. The Photography Museum Of Thessaloniki became institutionalised with a law included in the bill that the Ministry of Culture presented to the Parliament. |
